All the world’s a stage, and the stage has always meant the world for Daphne Rubin-Vega, the multi-Tony Award-nominated actor, producer and Broadway legend who blazed trails in the mid-‘90s by originating the role of free-spirited doomed lover Mimi Marquez in the groundbreaking, Tony-winning, New York City-centric show, Rent.
Rubin-Vega’s showstopping performance fittingly earned the Panama-born, NYC-raised actress and singer a Theatre World Award for Broadway breakout star and her first Tony nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Musical—launching a highly acclaimed career spanning stage and screen.
With Latino representation as a foundational guiding light, Rubin-Vega earned her second Tony nod, this time for Best Featured Actress in a Play, for her 2003 role as Conchita in the stage production of Pulitzer Prize-winning Anna in the Tropics. She later delivered a marathon solo performance as Dolores in Empanada Loca, a contemporary spin on Sweeney Todd.
Following her Broadway success, Rubin-Vega transitioned to film and television with roles in In the Heights, tick, tick…BOOM!, and Jack Goes Boating, and appearances in Only Murders in the Building, Smash, and Hazbin Hotel. She also produced the Tribeca Film Festival feature Allswell.
Beyond performance, Rubin-Vega is a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, climate justice, and racial equity in the arts, contributing to initiatives with the Human Rights Campaign and the Labyrinth Theater Company.
For her invaluable and visionary contributions to film, theatre, television, and music, Manhattan University is proud to present Daphne Rubin-Vega with the inaugural Sixth Borough Film Festival Vanguard Award.
